Athaliah Kensington's Pov.
This cannot be happening. I was sitting at a police station waiting for this officer who seems dumb to me now, to let me go. I have been repeating the same thing for the past hour, but it seems like my words have fallen deaf on his ears.
“I will ask you one last time miss, where is your family?”, the officer whose name I got to know from his chest batch, Marek Frostborn, asked, getting annoyed now. It really seems like it was his last straw. However, last straw or not, my answer is not going to change.
“And for the last time I am saying that I have no family", I replied getting irritated by this.
If I was not handcuffed right now, I would have escaped by now without any such lame interrogation.
“Then who are you living with?”, he counter questioned me. “By myself.” I replied in a short sentence.
He pinched the bridge of his nose. Frustration. It was visible in his expressions and body language. “You are too young to be living by yourself.” His colleague, Thaddeus Grimstone, said boredly. He was leaning back on the wall for support, suggesting clearly how disinterested he is in this conversation. After years of practice, I have become quite good at reading faces and body language. It comes in handy in survival situations.
I took a short glance at him and focused back on the wall that hung different photo frames, some of which having quotes written on them. This whole ‘family thing’ bores me a lot. I do not have a family. I, Zahra Valkryie, have been living on my own for so long. “I don’t know why are we even asking her? We already took her DNA to find out about her family,” Officer Grimstone said. “I know. I was just making it easy for us.” His colleague replied.
I know what is going to happen. They will find someone who has the same DNA as mine. And that someone will refuse to acknowledge me. After that, these officers will take me to any nearest orphanage. From there, my dad will adopt me and scold me for getting in trouble. End of the story.
But what I did not know was that this story is going to have a twist, and that twist is about to change my life completely.
Suddenly, a third officer whose is yet unknown to me barged in and whispered something in the ear of Officer Frostborn. Eyes of both the officers widened. I guess they found the person I share my DNA with. Officer Frostborn started cracking his knuckles meaning he is nervous now. He cleared his throat and said, “We have found your blood relatives who are your brothers.” He stopped giving a dramatic pause. “And your brothers are coming here to adopt you back.”
What the fuck?
Out of all the thoughts and scenarios of what will happen to me tonight, this was not even on my list. My brothers. Those who abandoned me long ago. I cannot let that happen. “I don’t know what you are talking about. I won’t go with any stranger.”
I tried to play it safe.
However, Officer Grimestone, who was not interested in my business not a minute ago, was now definitely excited to watch the new events unfold in front of his eyes. Therefore, he decided to put his most important point forward and said, “You don’t sound like you don’t know them.” I averted my eyes. Officer Frostborn continued dropping bombs on me and said, “It will take them one and half hours to reach here. Till then, why don’t we go and collect your stuff from wherever you were living?”
I am not able to collect my thoughts right now, how will I gather my stuff. Am I really going to meet the ones who I used to call my brothers?
Can my life get any worse.
